Dialup sucks

Mar 30, 2004

Okay, so, I bought this MMORPG called Horizons: Empire of Istaria...

First night I settle down to play it, I figure, yeah, this game was released last December so I'm going to have to download a ton of updates to get the game where it stands today. I was expecting a couple hours at the most.

The updater starts up, slogging over my dialup connection... And five hours later the game begins sigh. Then, to make things worse, I had just made my character when I received the message: "The server will be shutting down for maintenance in 15 minutes."

I attributed it to just plain bad luck. Anyway, I sat down last night, and thought alright, no more updates, we can get right into the game! How sadly I was mistaken. Turns out, part of the "maintenance" was to add a slew of area maps, each map about 450K. So after three hours of waiting this time (I've read two novels already while waiting for this game!) I finally started playing.

Well, one thing they don't mention during the download, is that apparently not all of the terrain data is downloaded to your computer right away. It's loaded later when you finally teleport into the area where this data is needed. Well, two teleports took about 45 minutes of waiting away from the time I had left. I had enough time to make it to level 5 and that was it.

Right now I'm hoping these teleport waits are a one-time-thing because I'm not going to continue my subscription if I have to wait half an hour to teleport somewhere else.

It's not looking good yet. Let's see if it gets any better before my free month is up.
